Team Leader for European Nucleotide Archive

We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary leader with a strong biological background and clear demonstrable experience in the field of bioinformatic databases to head the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The position requires both technical leadership in the running of a complex database and strategic scientific leadership in the general areas of use of DNA information to the molecular biology community. The team leader will be expected to form external collaborations and raise funds via competitive peer review business grants.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. The ENA is a core component of this mission, with responsibility of EMBL-Bank, the peer of GenBank and DDBJ, the European component of the SRA, storing both long and short (next generation sequencing) reads and the associated submitted annotation and meta-data on this DNA sequence.

Applicants will have a student loans and grants in a biological science or PhD in another science and must have more than 5 years experience in direct biology. The ideal candidate must have the ability to provide overall technical leadership and clear participation in a large scale bioinformatics project. Whilst a high level of proficiency is not required, the ability to manage a technical program is, and programming and technical skills will be highly beneficial. The incumbent will have proven ability of managing a complex team and complex international collaborations.

Excellent English language, communication and interpersonal skills are a prerequisite for this post.

For a suitable candidate we would be able to directly appoint to this leadership position. We will also consider candidates who have less direct management experience but can show clear vision and enthusiasm in this area. For such a candidate we would consider appointing at a lower level with a two year program of mentoring and developing to allow such candidate to realise their potential in a leadership position.

European Master's Program in Computational Logic (EMCL)

European Master's Program in Computational Logic (EMCL), a unique distributed two-year master's program offered by leading European universities in the field of Computational Logic.

Application and Admission

If you fulfill the study requirements you may apply for the European Master's Program in Computational Logic. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Please consider that the whole procedure consists of two parts which are explained in detail in the sections Application Procedure and Admission Procedure below.

Application Procedure
The forthcoming application deadline will be on 15 May 2010. Applications must be received until that deadline. You can select one of three alternative possibilities for application:

1. Online Application
The online application will be available by mid of April 2010.
2. Application by Email

3. Application by Mail

5. Study curriculum. Applicants must complete a data table by filling in the data corresponding to their official transcript degree.
6. Diploma (first degree or bachelor degree). If the bachelor degree will only be available after the deadline for application, applicants are required to send us a PRELIMINARY certificate. This document must be signed and stamped by the home university and give the information when the studies will be finished and the final degree will be issued.
7. For students already enrolled in one of the local Master's programs at FUB, UNL or TUW only: an official statement proving that they are registered within the local Master's program and the current transcript degree.
8. English language certificate (TOEFL- or IELTS-reports). If the official report is not available before 15 May it can be sent later.
The following documents are not relevant for the evaluation of the application and can be sent later:
9. Higher Secondary School Certificate /Intermediate Examination Certificate.
10. Dichiarazione di Valore. This document is issued by the competent Italian diplomatic authorities.
11. For Chinese students: The original APS certificate. This document must by applied for to the German embassy in Peking at an early stage.
12. Vietnamese students: The original APS certificate. This document must by applied for to the German embassy in Hanoi at an early stage.

Admission Procedure
The evaluation of applications will be performed as specified in the regulations. See All About EMCL, Section Evaluation.
Students will be informed on the acceptance on 10 June.

If the joint commission has accepted you as candidate for the European Master's Program in Computational Logic you are requested to send THREE complete sets of the required application documents (one originally certified copy and two duplicates) by MAIL to the following address:

All copies of the original transcripts and degrees must be authenticated as true copies of the originals with a stamp and signature by an authorized institution (i. e. German embassy, consulate, public notary). The accuracy of the attached English translation of the documents must be confirmed.
